First Freedom Center Opens - Friday The First Freedom Center opens to the public this Friday with a splashy ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. At 3 p.m., the doors open to the public with 2,200 square feet of installations that explore religious liberty from European roots to today. Outside the center, a monumental spire designed by Christopher Hildebrand was installed to mark the site. The Center sits on the site where the Virginia General Assembly met in 1786 and ensured the right of Americans to freely choose religion. 1321 E. Main St., 643-1786.
