Take Care of Your Teeth and Decrease Risk of Hypertension

People with high blood pressure (BP) taking medication for their condition are more likely to benefit from the therapy if they have good oral health. According to Dr. Ryne Johnson, prosthodontist and director of Newton Wellesley Dental Partners, The research is based on a review of medical and dental exam records of more than 3,600 people with high BP. Researchers found that those with healthier gums had lower BP and responded better to blood pressure-lowering medication, compared with individuals who had gum disease, a condition known as periodontitis. People with periodontal disease were 20 per cent less likely to reach healthy BP ranges, compared with patients in good oral health.
